We paint and create for a living and we love what we do
We paint and create for a living and we love what we do.
It all began with a paintbrush, a very special pot of paint and a big imagination…
I am trained in Fine Art, Interior Design and Marketing and I created Marmalade House to bring together a life-long love of colour and interiors; to showcase my work and my desire to help make homes just that little bit more beautiful.
A chance encounter with interiors expert Annie Sloan, many years ago, led to my being influenced by her special colour palate and the history of European colour, which is reflected in my work and in everything I do.
At Marmalade House, we create very special paint finishes to furniture and to products we source from all over the world. We also work closely with local suppliers and design our own soft furnishings in-house. We only sell beautiful things and nothing leaves our studio that isn’t of the highest standard.
We love to share our passion with our customers and our clients and we hope you like what we do. Some of our pieces are classically painted, some our contemporary but we hope you’ll like our Marmalade style and one day come and see us and be inspired… x
The Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Palette
At Marmalade House we work with many paints and designers, but for furniture we like to use a unique and wonderful eco-friendly, chalk-based paint by interiors expert, Annie Sloan.
The paint is quite unlike any other available and is specially blended to give a chalky finish reminiscent of the days of lime-wash and distemper. It is designed for furniture, floors and walls, but it covers almost any surface with no preparation required. The paint has a lovely thick texture, is easy to use and dries quickly, leaving a soft matt patina, perfect for ageing and distressing.
The colours are specially selected to be used alone or together, layering one over another to give a wonderful antique look. Clear wax can then be applied to seal the paint work and give a mellow, polished effect.
For a more aged, rustic, lime-washed or more modern effects, coloured waxes can then be carefully added and blended with the clear wax to create a bespoke finish.
Old White
Use this versatile white to lighten other colours or pair it with Paris Grey or Aubusson for the Swedish look.
Country Grey
This cool soft neutral is a great foil for other colours and a classic choice for painted furniture.
Primer Red
A colour found in everything from Venetian palaces to Vietnamese temples, use this for rustic pieces of under gilding.
Louis Blue
Pair this pastel with white for a fine Rococo look or combine with brights for a vintage retro aesthetic.
Antibes Green
Not only found in the neoclassical palette, but also on rustic country furniture from Ireland and the south of France.
Barcelona Orange
This brilliant modern orange is based on the colour used copiously by the impressionists, early advertising and 1960’s decoration.
Furniture Painting
Our award-winning furniture painting and commission service is our speciality at Marmalade House. We have many years of painting furniture professionally, for large or small projects and we’re always very happy to advise or visit you to discuss your ideas.
Whether you need to re-style many pieces of furniture; whether you have horrors in the attic you can’t bear to look at or throw away; or if you have simple items that just need a facelift then we are able to help.
Our beautiful hand-painted French and Gustavian finishes can be bespoke painted in any colour of your choice, and our colour-layering techniques offer a subtle, vintage feel that can blend into any colour-scheme.
We are skilled in painting kitchens and can advise you how to transform your current units and cabinets without having to replace them. We blend lacquers with our paint for a robust, hard-wearing surgace that still has our beautiful trademark chalkiness.

First things first:
We come and meet you and discuss your project, timescale and budget and chat to you about what will make your project truly your own. We advise you on how we can help and what it might cost you.
Ideas:
We can then sketch out and present our ideas, with either hand-drawn or digital images and mood boards, providing colour and fabric samples.
Engagement:
You can then decide whether to take the project over yourself, have us involved along the way as consultants, or ask us to project manage your work from start to finish.
Checking and finishing:
At whatever level of engagement, we keep in touch with you to make sure your project is going well and you are happy. We also like to provide the final finishing and styling for projects we have been involved in from the outset – often the most important part of the project – to make sure you have the ‘look’ that was conceived at the outset.
We also offer a professional furniture painting service, using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, that transforms and updates the simplest to most ornate pieces. Our clients can choose from a range of finishes, from flat waxed, to distressed and aged or we can layer colours for a more creative result. We are also skilled in stencilling, gilding, crackle-glazing and decoupage.
Sourcing and photography:
We often work with designers, magazines, photographers and companies who like to use our services for product sourcing, styling or preparing backdrops for large or small film budgets. From painting crates, to buying fruit and decorating fabrics we can help you to find your style and put your ideas together.
Locations:
At Marmalade House we facilitate and work on locations shoots for film, TV and stills. We have a wide-range of corporate clients who use our services. Please contact us directly for more information if you are interested in this service.
“You have helped us beyond measure. Your eye and vision has translated exactly what we hoped for into a design reality. Thank you.”
